Description
Numbers 35A-D, 36-43, Gibson Square, are a group of terraced houses dating to approximately 1828-30. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern with stucco detailing, and the roof is hidden behind a parapet. The houses originally formed a symmetrical composition, with numbers 36 and 37 projecting, and numbers 42 and 43 forming an end pavilion. The other end has been reconstructed to match the original appearance and is now numbers 35E and 35F, and is not included in this listing. A basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor showing banded rustication. Steps lead to round-arched entrances with pilaster surrounds, these are panelled, except at number 41 where they are partly panelled and partly reeded, and at number 42 where they are reeded; panelled doors are present. Number 43 has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight and panelled door, framed by pilasters and an entablature. Ground-floor windows are round-arched with radiating glazing bars to numbers 35A, 35C-38, 41 and 42, some with margin lights. First-floor windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves and cornices to numbers 35A-D, 38-41, whereas numbers 36-37 and 42-43 have round-arched windows with gauged brick heads, all featuring iron balconies. Second-floor windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves. The windows are mostly 6/6 sashes, with the first-floor windows of numbers 36 and 37 featuring radiating glazing bars. A stucco band and cornice runs along the front, with the cornice lost on numbers 35A and 42-43. The parapet is stepped up over numbers 36 and 37, and stacks are located on the party walls. Area railings are present with spear-and-tassel finials, some of which have been replaced.
