Description
Numbers 17 to 22 Highbury Terrace are a group of terraced houses dating from around 1789. They are constructed of yellow brick laid in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and have a parapet concealing the roof. The houses vary in window arrangement, with number 17 having six windows, numbers 18 to 20 having four each, and numbers 21 and 22 having two each, all set over a basement.
Steps lead to round-arched entrances. Number 17 features a cornice and a panelled door of its original design. Number 18 has a superimposed prostyle Doric porch with a mutule cornice. Numbers 19 and 20 feature slim fluted columns supporting a fluted cornice and a decorative fanlight, with a panelled door of original design to number 20. Numbers 21 and 22 have pilasters in the reveals and Roman Doric columns supporting an entablature with a mutule cornice, a decorative fanlight, and a panelled door of original design. All the windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads, and those on the first floor are set in round-arched recesses with gauged brick heads; a stucco sill band runs across the first-floor windows. Original 6/6 sash windows are present on the first floors of numbers 17 and 19, and number 22. The second-floor windows of numbers 21 and 22 are slightly shallower than those of the other houses. The cornice is of brick and moulded stucco to numbers 17 to 20, and a brick frieze mimicking triglyphs sits beneath a moulded stucco cornice to numbers 21 and 22. There are two dormers on number 18, and stacks dividing the party walls.
The area railings have urn standards and spike finials to numbers 17 to 20, with overthrows on numbers 19 and 20; numbers 21 and 22 have urn standards and arrowhead finials.
