Description
This is a cast-iron post box dating from 1866 to 1876, designed by JW Penfold. It stands on Aberdeen Park, near its junction with Highbury Grove. The box has a hexagonal form and sits on a high plinth, featuring a ball cornice and a raised ogee top with a leaf pattern. The original finial is missing.
In 1913, the post box was damaged by members of the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), a group campaigning for women's suffrage. Between 1911 and 1913, suffragettes targeted post boxes across Britain with fire, corrosive liquids, ink, and incendiary devices to destroy mail. This particular box was set on fire on 30 January 1913, destroying most of its contents. The listing was updated in 2018 to mark the centenary of the 1918 Representation of the People Act.
