Description

Numbers 10 and 11 Highbury Place are a pair of semi-detached houses built between 1773 and 1774 and developed and designed by John Spiller. The houses are constructed of brick and stucco, with slate roofs. They are three storeys high, with a basement and dormers in the attic; each house has five windows. Number 10 features an enclosed stucco porch with a round-arched entrance, Ionic antae (flat, rectangular columns), and an enriched entablature (the horizontal band above the columns). Number 11 has a round-arched entrance with a fanlight (transom window above the door), set within a stucco doorcase with a cornice supported on consoles (ornate brackets). All windows have flat arches with heads of gauged red brick. A stucco sill band runs along the first-floor windows, and a broad band sits above the second-floor windows. The first floor of Number 11 retains sashes of their original design. The houses have a parapet (low wall along the roofline) and end stacks (chimneys at the ends of the building), as well as a stack within the party wall between the two houses. Number 11 also has dormers in the attic. The attached cast-iron railings have pinched spike and acorn finials, although they have been partly replaced on Number 11. Number 10 features an overthrow (ornamental upper part of a railing) to the basement, while Number 11 has a scrolled overthrow with a lampholder.
