Description

Numbers 19 and 20 Compton Terrace are a pair of terraced houses built between 1803 and 1809, developed by Henry or Jacob Leroux. They are constructed of brick and stucco, with slate roofs. The houses are three or four storeys high, with a three-window front and entrance wings attached to either side.

Number 19 has a two-storey right-hand entrance wing which has been partly altered to incorporate a side entrance to the Union Chapel. This includes steps leading up to a round-arched entrance, framed by a moulded stucco architrave and a fanlight which is now blocked, with a segmental-arched window above. Number 20 has a single-storey left-hand entrance wing with steps leading to a round-arched entrance with a reeded doorcase and an original panelled door. The ground-floor windows are round-arched, recessed under a round arch with heads of gauged red brick, and linked by stucco springing bands. A stucco storey band runs along the front, and the upper windows are flat-arched; the first-floor windows of number 19 have been shortened. A parapet runs along the roofline. Number 20 has round-arched dormers in its mansard roof. Chimney stacks are located on the party walls.

The rear elevations feature first-floor cast-iron balconies. The front is protected by area railings with spearhead and urn finials.
