Description

Number 48 is a terraced house built in 1821, developed by Richard Laycock. It features yellow brick set in Flemish bond, stucco, and a roof made of Welsh slate. The main facade faces Canonbury Square and consists of four storeys over a basement, with a three-window range and a double-fronted design. There are steps leading up to a round-arched entrance that is framed in stucco, with pilasters supporting a rusticated arch that has a vermiculated keystone. The doorcase is inset with pilasters that support a modillion cornice, and it includes a fanlight with decorative glazing bars and a panelled door of original design.

All the windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads. The windows on the ground and second floors have 6/6 sashes, while the first-floor windows are of piano nobile proportions and feature a balcony supported by brackets. The building has a parapet and round-arched dormers in the mansard roof. The elevation facing Canonbury Lane also has four storeys above a basement and a three-window range, with the outside windows being blank, and 6/6 sashes on the ground and second floors. There is a cast-iron balcony on the first floor and cast-iron railings in the area with spear and urn finials.
