Description

These are a group of three terraced houses, numbers 40A, 40, and 41, dating from approximately 1810 and developed by Henry Leroux. They are constructed of brown brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco finishes. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. Each house has four storeys over a basement, with two windows at each level. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, the ground floor featuring banded rustication. Steps lead to a round-arched entrance with fluted columns supporting a cornice, a fanlight with glazing bars, and panelled doors of original design. The ground-floor windows are also round-arched. Upper floor windows are flat-arched with gauged brick heads; the first-floor windows have particularly grand proportions (piano nobile), and have balconies supported by brackets with iron railings. These balconies are set within round-arched recessed panels with gauged brick heads. Some windows are 6/6 sash windows, particularly on the first and second floors. The property includes cast-iron area railings.
