Description
This is a terrace of houses at Numbers 143 to 199 (odd), with attached railings, built between 1821 and 1824. They are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with stucco detailing, and the roofs are hidden behind a parapet. The terrace is three storeys high with a basement, and each house typically has two windows. The design is symmetrical, with Numbers 167 to 177 projecting slightly, and a panelled parapet above Numbers 171 to 173 displaying the name 'CLOUDESLEY TERRACE' within wreaths. The basement level is stuccoed. Above the basement, all windows have heads constructed of gauged yellow brick. The entrances are round-arched, with fluted quarter-columns, fanlights, and some retain original panelled doors. Ground-floor windows are also round-arched, with a stucco band separating the ground floor from the others. Upper-floor windows have flat arches, those on the piano nobile level being larger in proportion and featuring balconies with cast-iron railings. The windows are set back under round arches of gauged red brick, connected by a stucco springing band. The parapet has been largely rebuilt, and there are stacks integrated into the party walls.
Individual houses display variations: Number 143 has a round-arched entrance within a three-storey bay set back from the return, features a mutule cornice, and has blank upper windows. Number 149 has replacement quarter-columns. Numbers 151 to 153, 159 to 161, 175 to 183, 187 to 199, and 193 to 197 have decorative glazing to their fanlights. Number 195 retains original design sash windows on the ground floor. Number 199 has a round-arched entrance within a three-storey bay set back from the return, featuring decorative glazing to the fanlight, with blank upper windows. A range of original and replacement cast-iron railings are present.
