Description
Numbers 51 to 75 (odd) and attached railings are a group of terraced houses dating from approximately 1828-30. They are built of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco finishes. The roof is hidden by a parapet. Most of the properties have three storeys over a basement, except for numbers 61 to 65, which have an additional attic storey. Generally, each house has two windows, though numbers 53 and 73 have a single-window range.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor exhibiting banded rustication. Round-arched entrances are a feature, with fluted quarter-columns flanking them – except at numbers 53 and 57-9, where plain pilaster jambs are present. All entrances except those at numbers 51 to 55 have a fanlight with decorative glazing. The ground floor windows are round-arched, while the upper floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads, with the exception of numbers 61 to 65, which have round arches to the first floor. Iron balconies are present on the first-floor windows except at number 71. The windows are largely original 6/6 sashes, including examples with radiating glazing bars and margin lights on the ground floor.
Numbers 61 to 65 have a moulded stucco cornice above the second floor, and a similar cornice with a stepped profile above the third floor. Number 73 features a giant order of paired pilasters to the first and second floors, supporting an entablature and pediment. Number 53, which would have originally matched number 73, retains some remnants of this ornamentation, although the pediment is missing. Stacks are located on the party walls. Cast-iron railings are present around the area. The properties of Numbers 51 to 75 form the south side of Gibson Square.
