Description

Numbers 20 to 44 (even), and the attached railings, form a terrace of houses built around 1828-30 in Islington. The terrace is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing. The roof is hidden behind a parapet. The symmetrical design features projecting end bays, including number 17 Studd Street, and numbers 20-22 and 42-44 Theberton Street.

The houses are three storeys high, with a basement, and generally have two windows each, except for the end bays which have a single window. The basement and ground floor are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated with banded rustication. Steps lead to segmental-arched entrances, with varying depths at numbers 22 and 42. Numbers 24 and 36-40 have panelled pilaster jambs, numbers 22 and 42 have plain jambs, numbers 26-32 have reeded pilaster jambs which appear to be replacements, and number 44, which also has a side entrance in Moon Street, has Greek Doric columns. A cornice and fanlight with decorative glazing are present at numbers 22, 24, 34, and 38-40.

Number 17 Studd Street, numbers 22 and 42-44 Theberton Street have tripartite windows to all three floors, with a giant order of stucco pilasters topped by a cornice and blocking course, now unmoulded on numbers 17 Studd Street and 22 Theberton Street. The central section of the terrace has round-arched ground-floor windows and flat-arched upper windows with gauged brick heads. The ground-floor windows have 6/6 sashes with margin lights and radiating glazing bars. 6/6 sashes are common on the first and second floors of numbers 34-40. A parapet is present, with stacks on the party walls. The area railings have ball-and-disc and spearhead finials.
