Description
The Post Office at No. 116 Upper Street in Islington was built around 1906. It is a five-storey building with a basement, constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof. The facade features a nine-window range, with the outer entrance bays projecting to three storeys and topped by a pediment displaying the letters "ER" in the tympanum.
The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication and includes flat-arched entrances framed in polished granite, each topped with a cornice and a smaller segmental pediment adorned with festoons. There are two round-arched windows with a Gibbs surround and a cartouche between them, which is inscribed with 'NORTHERN DISTRICT POST OFFICE'. A storey band separates the ground floor from the upper levels.
Most of the upper windows are flat-arched, except for keyed oculi located in the outermost bays of the third floor. The first-floor outer windows feature architraves and pediments, while the inner bays have architraves with cartouches above them. The second-floor windows have simpler architraves.
The three central bays are flanked on the first floor by barely engaged Ionic columns that support an entablature. This design continues with four caryatids flanking the second-floor windows, which support a balcony with balustrades. Above the three central third-floor windows, there is a pediment that features the royal coat of arms in the tympanum, along with a cornice and parapet. Dormers have been inserted between the left-hand side stack and one that is slightly off centre.
