Description

This is a former school building, dating from the early 19th century, now used as shops, offices, and a garage. It is constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with stucco detailing. The front building has a slate roof hidden behind a parapet, while the rear has a separate slate roof. The main section is four storeys high and has a double-fronted design, with five windows across the front. The ground floor features a stucco shop front with a central round-arched entrance, flanked by pilasters with consoles and a round-arched archivolt above the entrance. The fanlight above the doorway has decorative glazing. Surviving elements of the mid-to-late 19th century include consoles and fascia stops with decorative wrought-iron finials. The upper-floor windows have flat arches with gauged brick heads, except for the central first-floor window, which has a moulded stucco architrave with a cornice on consoles. Above this window, a moulded stucco panel has been altered to incorporate a window. A stucco sill band runs along the second-floor windows, and a moulded stucco cornice tops the building. End stacks are present, and original rainwater heads are on the right-hand return. A three-storey wing extends to the rear, featuring apsidal ends and a five-window range on its north side. 20th-century garage openings are on the ground floor of the rear wing, with rebuilt, replica round-arched windows on the first floor and a rebuilt parapet. A late 20th-century mansard roof with dormers has been added. A single-storey wing of uncertain date is located in the angle between the front and rear buildings. The interior vestibule and entrance hall have pilasters supporting round arches; the ceiling is cross-vaulted with modelled doves of peace in the side spandrels and a central wreath boss. The former schoolroom on the first floor of the rear building contains a late 20th-century gallery, replacing an earlier one.
