Description
Numbers 44-70 form a terrace of houses built around 1828-30 in Islington. The houses are constructed of yellow brick in a Flemish bond, with stucco sections, and have roofs of Welsh and artificial slate. They are three and four storeys high, with a basement level, and typically feature two windows to each elevation, although numbers 50 and 69 have only one window.
Numbers 49-70 form a symmetrical group along Gibson Square, with numbers 58-61 breaking forward as a central feature. The end houses, numbers 49-51 and 68-70, also project forward and are distinguished by three pairs of giant pilasters with an entablature, and a pediment above the middle house.
The basement and ground floors are stuccoed, with the ground floor decorated with banded rustication. Round-arched entrances are accessed by steps and have pilaster jambs which are panelled – reeded at number 46, plain at numbers 50 and 51 and at numbers 65, 66 and 70, the pilasters are partly sunk in the jamb. These entrances are topped with a cornice and a fanlight containing decorative glazing to numbers 42-7, 49-51, 53-58, 62-63, 65 and 69. Some of the original panelled doors remain. Ground floor windows are round-arched with radiating glazing bars. However, some of these are missing or have been replaced at numbers 47-49, 51, 56, 59-60, 67-68. First-floor windows have flat arches and stucco architraves and cornices. Numbers 58-61 feature round-arched windows with gauged brick heads and radiating glazing bars at numbers 58-60. Iron balconies are present to all but number 68. Second-floor windows are flat-arched with stucco architraves. Numbers 44-5 and 58-61 have a cornice and an attic storey, while the remaining houses have a stucco band to the parapet. Stack chimneys are located on the party walls. Attached cast-iron area railings include ball-and-disc, spear and tassel finials.
