Description

49 Thornhill Road is a house, now used as an office, built in 1868 or 1869. It is constructed of stock brick and features a hipped slate roof with end stacks. The building has two storeys and a three-window range that includes two-light casements and a central six-over-six sash window. The exterior is adorned with moulded shouldered architraves and a central porch supported by Ionic columns with an entablature. The entrance has a panelled door with an overlight, and there is a single-storey extension to the right.

Inside, the property boasts a stick baluster staircase and other contemporary fittings. The ground floor room is particularly notable for its elaborate plaster or papier mache decoration, which includes the ceiling, wall panels, doors, and overdoors, featuring the initials JHB. There is also a marble fireplace with an overmantel. In 1871, the house was occupied by James Howel Boekbinder or Bookbinder, a Dutch manufacturer known for carton pierre or papier mache, suggesting that this interior may be a fine example of his craftsmanship.
