Description

These are a pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1835 by Bilham, located on the north side of Barnsbury Square. The main facades are of yellow stock brick, with the rest of the buildings faced in stucco. They have Welsh slate hipped roofs with projecting eaves; number 28 has bracketed eaves. The roof also has centre and right-end wall brick stacks. The design follows a side-hall entrance plan.

The villas are three storeys high, with basements, each featuring three windows. Number 28 has a narrower, recessed entrance bay with a single window, and number 27 has a one-window two-storey extension. A stucco storey band defines the ground floor, while a sill band runs along the first floor. Steps lead up to the entrances: number 27 has a 20th-century enclosed wooden porch, and number 28 a more elaborate, original cast-iron porch with a pediment and a pair of six-panelled doors with glazing. The inner bay's ground floor window is a 1/1 sash with side-lights, and the first floor window has a 6/6 sash, both featuring a decorative “Barnsbury wreath” in their triangular headwork. Number 27’s windows have gauged brick arches, while number 28’s have architraves, keystones and sill brackets. Upper-floor windows in the entrance bay and the second-floor windows in the inner bay are 6/6 sashes, with the latter set in flat-arched recesses. A 20th-century extension is present on number 27; an earlier extension to number 28 has 1/1 sashes with margin lights, a bracketed cornice to the first floor, and a coping to the parapet.
