Description

This is a pair of semi-detached villas built between 1851 and 1852, with alterations and an addition made in the mid-to-late 20th century. The walls and railings are also included in the listing.

The houses are constructed with stucco over brick, featuring quoins that highlight the division between the two properties on the facade. They have a hipped slate roof with deep eaves supported by shaped brackets. The design includes a central block flanked by wings of decreasing size. The villas are two storeys high with an attic over a basement. Originally symmetrical with a 1:1:2:1:1 bay arrangement, the entrances are set back from the central block. Number 4 has a 20th-century extension, and Number 2 features arch-headed windows in the attic that break through the eaves cornice, each containing a six-pane sash window within a moulded surround. Similar sash windows are found on the first floor of the main block. The wing to the left of Number 2 has a blind window, surmounted by a moulded parapet. A ground-floor bay window in Number 2 has mixed glazing and a cast-iron balcony, and an entrance is approached by a flight of six steps to a pilaster porch. Number 2 has a six-panel door, while Number 4 has a more recent half-glazed door with an ornamental grill. Two figures of recumbent lions are positioned on piers at the foot of the steps. Brick piers and walls front the road, with renewed railings dating from the mid-20th century. The treatment of the attic dormers is notable as an unusual and original feature.
