Description
This is a pair of semi-detached villas, built around 1852 and later refenestrated in the late 19th century. They were likely designed by F.D. Bannister. The buildings are constructed of red brick with a diaper pattern, and painted quoins mark the wings and window openings. They have a painted plinth, a slate roof with cross gables, coped verges, and external stacks topped with tall clusters of six ornamental chimney pots on brick plinths with quoins.
The villas are likely arranged in an H-plan, with entrances located on the returns of slightly projecting wings. They have two storeys over a basement, plus an attic. The windows are sash windows, some without glazing bars, with attic casements featuring a single horizontal glazing bar. The gables are shaped with finials and kneelers to the wings, and more ornamental gables with finials to two 2-light attic dormers rising from the eaves. There are 2-light windows in the gable ends, and 2-storey canted bays with an ornamental frieze and a decorative string of quatrefoils. There has been some rebuilding to the roofline of number 43. Central mullions with hoodmoulds create two narrow windows in the central bays on both storeys; the centre range has two 2-light windows linked by a continuous hoodmould.
On the left return (number 42), a full-height projecting gable wing is on the right, with a central entrance, an external stack to the right, and a 2-light window in the gable end, a 3-light window below, and a single-story canted bay on the ground floor. The entrance is via a porch with a shaped gable and finial, a cambered head opening, a recessed door, a 2-light window above, and a small 2-light window in a shaped gabled dormer with a finial. A large external stack is on the right, but tall chimney pots have been removed. The right return (number 43) is similar, but the gable of the porch and its finial on the east gable are missing.
A low wall fronts the road, constructed of brick with moulded coping. It incorporates octagonal gate piers with moulded coping, and a central pier at the junction with the wall that returns to the buildings. F.D. Bannister, the architect responsible for much of Upper Cliftonville, resided at number 42 in 1856.
