Description

This is a terrace of houses, built around 1840, located on the south side of Kingsway in Hove. The terrace comprises Courtenay Terrace, Courtenay House, Courtenay Tye, Courtenay Beach, and associated walls. In 1922, additions were made to the north front, including attic extensions, with further alterations carried out later. The buildings are stucco-faced over brick, with a variety of roof types; the majority are flat, with a mansard slate roof to Courtenay Beach and roughcast chimney stacks.

The original design consists of three units in a terrace. The south front is four stories high, with attic additions, and features 2, 3, 3 and 3 bays. There are three prominent three-window bow fronts. The facade has a moulded cornice and moulded surrounds to sash windows, with mixed glazing bar patterns. A continuous hooded canopy with a pelmet, supported by cast iron columns, runs across the first floor. Courtenay House retains its original cast iron balustrade, while the others have been renewed. French casement windows are present on the first floor, and later 20th-century fenestration is found at ground floor level.

The garden walls along the south front are constructed of coursed pebbles with a cement humpback coping.
