Description

A pair of semi-detached villas dating from around 1890, built by William Bell and Sons of Saffron Walden and Cambridge. The construction is predominantly red brick with portions of dressed random rubble stone facing, ashlar dressings, and Westmorland slate hanging, incorporating fishscale panels. The roof is slate with terracotta cresting and a copper spirelet. The chimneys include a central axial stack with recessed panels, a gable stack to the right, and a left-hand stack with decorative terracotta shafts. The architectural style is vernacular revival. The villas are two storeys with an attic and basement. The asymmetrical design features a main range with a two-bay cross-wing to the left and a turret to the right. A recessed wing to the right contains the entrance and porch, with a glazed timber porch on the left-side wall. A ramp leads down to a 20th-century garage on the right. The front elevation has varied window placement; iron casements are found within stone mullions in the principal ground floor windows, while other windows are mainly small-paned timber casements. The cross-wing includes an oriel window on the ground floor and a pair of oriels on the first floor, set under a jetty with decorative plaster coving and swags above the windows. Decorative bargeboards and finials are also present. The polygonal turret has a band of windows at attic level and a wind vane. A single gabled dormer is located on the main roof.
