Description
Linden Lodge is a house located on London Road in Saffron Walden. It was built in the early 19th century, with extensions added around 1860 and in the early 20th century. The building is constructed from red brick in Flemish bond with burnt headers and features stone dressings. It has a hipped slate roof with a central well and side ridge stacks that have canted ends.
The front of the house has two storeys and three bays, with a three-storey range on the right side and a canted single-storey extension at the rear. There is a mid-19th century glazed timber conservatory attached to the left side, along with a projecting single-storey porch from the early 20th century and a single-storey service wing on the right side. The first and third front bays are recessed between stone pilasters and have a moulded cornice and wedge lintels. Most windows are 12-pane sashes, except for later French doors above the porch.
The porch features a dentilled brick cornice, a panelled door with a radial fanlight under a segmental gauged brick arch, and flanking single-light windows. On the left side, the right bay is recessed between stone pilasters and has a single-storey canted bay window, with a central door that has a fanlight under a gauged white brick segmental arch and 4-pane sashes. Above, there are French doors, and to the left is a later two-storey canted bay window that is rendered and has moulded architraves and 2-pane sashes. The conservatory includes stained glass panels.
On the right side, the left bay is recessed between pilasters and features various sash windows, some with stone wedge lintels and keyblocks. Inside, there is a staircase with stick balusters, a mahogany handrail, carved tread-ends, and a later newel post. The first-floor front rooms have good mid-19th century fireplaces.
The boundary wall along London Road is made of red brick with stone coping and includes two pairs of octagonal piers with stepped stone caps and a stone plinth band. The railings are missing, and there are two pairs of 20th-century gates.
