Description
The Duke of York Public House is an early 19th-century public house located on High Street in Saffron Walden. It is constructed of painted brick and features a hipped asbestos slate roof with three gault brick stacks. The building has two storeys.
The front façade is characterized by wide outer pilasters and a pair of narrower central pilasters, all with moulded capitals. The eastern bay includes a two-storey projecting brick bow that has a cornice and three linked 12-paned double-hung sash windows on each floor. Between the central pilasters, above the door, there is a 12-paned double-hung sash window, with a door that has a rectangular fanlight above it. This entrance is accessed by two stone steps with wrought-iron handrails. The western bay features one 12-paned double-hung sash window on the first floor, situated above a small-paned tripartite double-hung sash window and a later plain double-hung sash window.
