Description

The Baptist Church Hall in Saffron Walden is a chapel built around 1775, with 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring random burnt headers, and has a concrete tile roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with a 19th-century lean-to extension on the eastern end. The flank wall facing the street includes a later lateral stack situated between the first and second bays.

The eaves are wide and overhanging, supported by paired modillion soffits. The street-facing elevation showcases late 19th-century two-light mullion and transom windows with leaded lights, featuring round arches on the first floor and segmental arches on the ground floor. There are central double-leaf six-panel doors inserted into the façade. The gabled eastern end has windows arranged in a pattern of one, three, and one, with the central group originally being full height and a central bulls-eye window in the gable. The ground floor features 20th-century sash windows, while the first floor retains an original three-light mullion and transom window with leaded lights and a recessed central opening light on the right side. Other windows on the first floor are 19th-century and similar to those on the street elevation. The rear flank wall has a range of four original first-floor windows, with the first and second bays featuring ferramenta. The ground floor windows have been replaced in the 19th century, consistent with the earlier style. The current church is attached to the western end of the hall.
