Description
This is a lamp post located in front of numbers 89 and 90 on High Street in Saffron Walden. It dates from between 1836 and 1850 and stands approximately 5.5 meters high. Originally situated in the Market Place, it was moved to High Street in 1863 and then relocated from the War Memorial site to its current position in 1921. The lamp post is made of cast iron and features a round tapered fluted stem that is topped with a bold leaf-decorated quarter round and cyma moulded base. The lower supporting pedestal consists of a reeded drum with a lower cornice that matches the stem. At the base, there is a broad moulded section that rests on the pavement. The upper section, added in the 20th century, is cylindrical and holds a pair of bracketed lamps with decorative scrolled ironwork and pierced crown heads. An acorn from the 19th century stem protrudes at the top. Historical photographs from 1854 show this lamp as a central feature of the Market Place.
