Description
The Market Lamp is a lamp post located on Castle Street in Melbourne, dating from 1838, with restoration and alterations made around 1970. It is constructed from stone and cast iron. The lamp features a stepped stone plinth with a square pedestal on top, which is capped by a wide moulded stone slab. An iron column rises from the pedestal, supporting the lamp. The pedestal has panelled sides with quarter circles cut out of each corner, and the western panel is inscribed with 'Market Re-opened July 30 1838'. The iron column has leaf decoration at the base, a fluted stem, and a foliage capital. Above this, there is a 20th-century lamp encircled by a single hoop with scrolls at the base. The lamp is included for its group value only.
