Description
14 London Road is a house with a shop and carriageway, built in the early to mid-19th century. It features a brick exterior that has been colourwashed, with a slate roof and a red brick chimney. The building has a U-shaped plan, with a principal range and rear wings on either side of the carriageway.
The south front elevation is divided by pilasters into five symmetrical bays, with the outer two bays being narrower than the central three. The central carriageway has an elliptical-headed entrance with two bead-moulded, boarded doors. To the east, there is a late 19th-century double-fronted shop that intrudes into the two eastern bays, featuring a splayed recessed entrance and single-paned shop windows with arched framing. The spandrels are decorated with leaf motifs, and the corner posts have leaf capitals and bases. The shop has a glazed door with a lower panel and a fascia board with terminal pendants.
The west end bay has a blocked round-arched doorway, while the adjacent bay has segment-headed sash windows on both the ground and first floors, with glazing bars arranged in a 3x4 pane configuration. Similar windows are found on the first floor above the carriageway and in the bay to the east. The outer first-floor windows at both ends are blind. There is a single dentilled chimney stack towards the west end, and the rear features two first-floor segment-headed sash windows.
There have been additions to the property, including a single-storey structure from the 19th century and a two-storey addition from the 20th century. The west end elevation is blank, constructed of red brick in a 'rat-trap' bond, while the east end abuts an adjoining property.
