24, 26 AND 28, LONDON ROAD

This is a row of three mid-19th century terraced houses located on London Road, Saffron Walden. The houses are built of red brick in Flemish bond, with a slate roof and red brick stacks. They comprise a rectangular principal block with a rear extension, and have cellars.

The front elevation to the south is an irregular composition, symmetrical for numbers 26 and 28, with a straight jointed connection to number 24. Each house has a single window range, with doors on the outer edges. Number 28 features a round arch over its doorway, currently containing a 20th-century fielded panel door. Its windows have voussoired straight heads and sashes with 3x4 panes. Number 26 has a simple rectangular door surround with bead moulding; the original hood is missing, and the door is a 19th-century design with four flush bead-moulded panels. Its windows are segment headed with sashes, the lower sash of the ground floor windows having been reduced to 2 panes of glazing. Number 24 has a two-window range, with a simple moulded door frame and hood, and a 20th-century door with six fielded panels. The ground floor and one first-floor window have slight segment heads and sashes with glazing bars; the upper window has been blocked. Stacks are irregular, including one on the east gable, one running through the roof pitch shared by numbers 26 and 28, and a larger stack at the apex of the roof over the doorway of number 28. The west end is blank, while the east end is obscured.
