Description

This is a mid-19th century terraced row of five houses located on Debden Road in Saffron Walden. The houses are built of red brick, some of which is burnt, with slate roofs and shared cruciform red brick stacks. The terrace follows the curve of the road at its junction with the High Street. The plan is of a parallel-sided range, although number 1 projects slightly at the rear. The houses are two storeys high and include cellars with grilles.

The front elevation features paired front doors with pilaster buttresses between, with stacks in the party walls. Each house originally had a single window range, featuring five windows in total. The doorways have elliptical heads with well-defined voussoirs; only the door of number 1 is original, consisting of six fielded panels. The remaining doors are 20th-century replacements with upper glazing. The windows are segment-headed, also with good voussoirs, and splayed York stone sills. Number 1 retains its original two-light casement windows with glazing bars in a 4x4 pane arrangement; the other windows have been altered but remain within their original openings. Numbers 7 and 9 have original shaped slates and some original scored pointing.

At the rear, each unit has a segment-headed door and window on the ground floor, and a corresponding window on the first floor. The original 19th-century windows are two-light casements with glazing bars in a 2x4 pane arrangement. The rear of number 1 retains its original boarded door in the south return face of the projection.
