Description

1 Claverhouse Drive in Edinburgh is a late 19th-century semi-detached pair of symmetrical villas, each two stories high and featuring three bays. They are situated on a ridge and constructed from squared and snecked rubble with polished ashlar dressings. The villas have raised and lugged window margins and raised quoins, with the eastern house having been stone cleaned. The timber sash and case windows include plate glass, with some featuring four-pane glazing. The eaves are bracketed, and the timber barge-boards display kingpost detail on the gabled dormer heads. The roofs are covered with grey slates and have corniced ashlar stacks topped with octagonal cans. There are later rooflights on the front and rear, and No 3 has a modern box dormer on the north side.

The front elevation features two outer bays that are broad, advanced, and gabled. The doors are located in the penultimate gabled bays and are adorned with a moulded, consoled doorpiece topped by a round-arched pediment with a sun-ray motif in the tympanum, along with a single window above. The outer bays have ashlar canted bays on the ground floor, with a stone balustrade leading to the first-floor bipartite windows. The two middle bays contain bipartite windows at ground level and single windows above that break the eaves in the gabled dormer heads.

The rear elevation faces Mount Vernon Road and features two-storey advanced gabled bays, along with a single-storey gabled wing that projects at right angles. The two middle bays have gabled dormer heads that also break the eaves.

The interior was not seen in 1995. The boundary walls consist of a low ashlar coped rubble wall at the front, which is higher at the rear and includes vehicular gates.
