Description
59 Morton Street in Edinburgh is a pair of mirrored cottage-style villas built in the later 19th century, with some later additions and alterations. These two-storey buildings feature a first floor that breaks the eaves and consist of three bays in total. They are constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings, and include a base course and a moulded string course between the ground and first floors. The margins have stop-chamfered arrises.
On the west (principal) elevation, the doors are centrally located, with a six-panelled door leading to No 59 and a modern door for No 61, which also has an augmented fanlight. There are narrow windows between the doors, and a bipartite window above on the first floor. The outer bays have canted windows at the ground level, with bipartite windows above each on the first floor. A continuous timber-bracketed canopy projects above the ground floor windows and doors.
The east (rear) elevation has not been fully seen since 1994. The windows are plate glass timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and features exposed roof rafters. The gables of the outer bays have intricate barge boarding, matching the design of Nos 55 and 57. The side elevations have rendered and coped gablehead stacks.
The boundary walls are made of sandstone with coping. The interiors have not been seen since 1994.
