Description
Kingston Grange is a classical mansion house, originally designed by Robert Adam and built between 1785 and 1788. It was significantly enlarged around 1840 in a Jacobean style, with later 20th-century additions to the rear (northwest) side. The house stands in an open, landscaped setting facing a golf course, on a sloping ground to the north.
The building is two and three stories high, with a square plan, a basement, and an attic. The original 18th-century Roman Doric column doorpiece has been incorporated into the 19th-century entrance elevation (southeast side). Shouldered gables are topped with tall, octagonal chimneystacks. The 1840 additions are in narrow, coursed ashlar, while the 18th-century section is rendered. Other features include architraves, a deep rubble base course, an 18th-century corniced eaves course, strip quoins, corniced skews.
The southeast (entrance) elevation has five bays arranged 1-1-3. A paired Roman Doric columned porch with a later blocking course fronts the advanced, shouldered gabled central section. Above the porch is a window surmounted with strapwork, and a small window in the gable apex. A slightly advanced three-light square-plan bay is to the left.
The southwest (side) elevation features a two-story, canted four-light bay to the right. Rendered bays step back to the left, with a single-story, 20th-century addition advancing to the far left.
The northwest (rear) elevation includes a three-light mullioned bay with a blocking course to the left, and a pair of small windows to the gable apex. Rendered bays step back slightly to the right, with a 20th-century flat roof extension to the far right.
On the northeast (side) elevation, the 18th-century section has a bowed center bay which is obscured at ground floor level by a later 20th-century flat roof extension.
The windows are timber sash and case, with a variety of glazing patterns. The roofs are pitched and piended, covered with grey slates. Corniced ridge stacks are present on the 18th-century section, some with clay cans, and shafted octagonal gable apex stacks are on the 1840s section.
The interior, viewed in 2012, retains some elements of the original Adam house room layout to the rear of the property. Notable features include an open-well, curved stone stair with a timber banister, cornicing, and classical fire surrounds. A glazed timber revolving entrance door leads to an entrance hallway with a prominent cantilevered stone stair with metal balusters. There is decorative plasterwork cornicing in the principal rooms, along with decorative and classical fire surrounds. Panelled timber doors and some working timber shutters are also present.
