Description
The stables at Craigend Park on Kingston Avenue in Edinburgh were designed by Frederick Pilkington between 1867 and 1869. This former stable block, now converted for residential use, features an L-plan layout with secular French Gothic detailing. The building consists of a two-storey main block and a single-storey wing to the northwest. Architectural elements include round-arched openings, bracketed eaves, beaked gables, and finialled dormers that break the eaves. The structure is constructed from rock-faced pink sandstone with cream sandstone dressings and band courses.
On the west elevation, which faces the courtyard, there is a segmental-arched cart entrance to the right, now fitted with modern glazing, and a modern conservatory to the left. Above, three dormers break the eaves. The single-storey wing to the outer right has a piend roof and features three segmental-arched openings, also with modern glazing, and decorative carved stone on the downpipe.
The south elevation has a gabled end with round-arched windows on both the ground and first floors, and a polygonal chimney stalk that is corbelled out with decorative carving at its base.
On the east elevation, there are segmental-arched openings on the ground floor, while bipartite dormers with round-arched windows flank a shouldered wallhead stack.
The north elevation shows the gable end of the two-storey block to the left, with segmental-arched openings on the ground floor, and the single-storey wing to the right.
The windows include plate glass, some sash and case, and some top hoppers, with some modern glazing. The roof is covered with blue-grey slates, and the polygonal stacks have cushioned caps.
Surrounding the property is a high rubble boundary wall that is coped, with pyramidally coped ashlar gatepiers and a crowstepped ashlar entrance arch.
