Description

Numbers 62 to 82 (even) and attached iron railings form a row of eleven terraced houses, originally known as Minerva Terrace, and representing the eastern range of Barnsbury Square. They were built around 1828. The houses are constructed of multi-coloured stock bricks in a Flemish bond pattern, with a banded stucco ground floor and stucco dressings. The roofs are gabled, covered in Welsh slate, and feature party-wall brick stacks.

The terrace is symmetrical, with projecting central bays (numbers 70 to 74) and end bays (numbers 62 and 82). They follow a side-hall entrance plan, except for the end houses which have a side entrance. Each house is three storeys high, with a basement and some attics, and contains two windows. Steps lead to the doorways, which have plain jambs and corniced heads. These doorways have panelled doors, with patterned Neo-Classical style fanlights above (although numbers 62, 64, 66, and 82 have plain glazing to their fanlights). The ground-floor windows are 6/6 sashes with curved and radial glazing bars, accompanied by gauged brick segmental arches and stucco sill bands. The upper 6/6 sashes are also full-length sashes. The first floor has iron balconies and railings. The central projecting bay features architraved sashes with cornices. Number 70 has had its cornice removed; numbers 72 and 74 retain a stucco cornice and parapet; and number 76 has remnants of 1st-floor cornices to its sashes and a stucco parapet. Most attics have dormers. Attached cast-iron area railings are present, and are finished with acorn finials.
