Description
The Belgian War Memorial, built around 1920, is located in St Mary's Roman Catholic Cemetery on Harrow Road. It is made of Portland stone and features a rectangular corniced architectural surround that backs onto the cemetery wall. The structure has a blocking course that rises to the center, resembling a pediment. At the center, there are two inset columns with Byzantine style capitals, which support a frieze inscribed with "Belgian soldiers 1914-1918." The memorial also includes a flanking altar with a sculpture of the Pieta, although the sculptor's signature is illegible. Additional inscriptions can be found to the right, left, and below the main inscription.
