Description

The Campbell Family Mausoleum, built in 1904 by CHB Quennell, is a notable structure featuring red brick with Portland stone banding and dressings, along with a cement screed covered dome and apse. It has copper doors and stained glass windows.

The mausoleum is designed in a neo-Byzantine style with polychromatic banding and an apsidal plan set on a rectangular Portland stone plinth. The exterior includes a stone cornice with four water spouts shaped like stylised animal heads, topped by a cement dome that has thermal windows on three sides. The east elevation features an openwork bronze door with glazed panels, framed by a stone surround with bead and spindle mouldings. This door is inscribed with the legend ‘VAULT OF THE LATE/ J D CAMPBELLS FAMILY'. Above the door, there is a panel with a cornice that displays a Chi-Rho monogram within a laurel wreath, carved in relief. Flanking the door are raised panels with a dentil border that list the names and dates of the deceased.

Inside, the ceiling is adorned with gold mosaic, while the dome has a blue mosaic border. The walls are lined with Ashburton and Torquay marble, featuring grey-green marble with a pink marble cornice. As of the last inspection in 2016, many of the marble panels were detaching from their supports. The apse contains blind arcading and an altar situated in a central, round-headed niche. The stained glass in the thermal windows showcases intricate foliate designs, depicting Christ Risen in the east window, the Pelican-in-her-Piety in the south window, and the Lamb of God in the north window.
