Description
The Tomb of Colonel Gideon Gorrequer, who died in 1841, is located in Kensal Green Cemetery. It features a square pedestal made of Portland stone, resting on a moulded base that is decorated with rusticated panels. There is a Carrara marble inscription panel, and the upper section tapers to support a cushion adorned with a shako, sword, sash, and medals. The tomb is surrounded by dwarf cast-iron railings on base slabs, and there are extensive remains of early paint. This tomb is considered one of the best military monuments in the cemetery, although the inscription is very worn. Historically, Gorrequer served as aide-de-camp to Sir Hudson Lowe, the Governor of St Helena, during Napoleon's exile and had numerous interactions with the emperor and his household.
