Description
The Harrow on the Hill War Memorial is a war memorial built in 1921, designed by architect William Douglas Caröe. It is made of Portland stone and features a Free Gothic style, resembling a wayside calvary cross. The memorial stands on an octagonal base with four steps, which are inscribed with the names of the fallen. The plinth has set-back corners and fielded panels on each face, with the central panel displaying raised gilded lettering in Free Roman capitals that reads "HARROW ON THE HILL TOWN MEMORIAL." Above this is an octagonal frieze with an inscription in Lombardic script that begins with "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY," and the lower register is decorated with ball-flower ornamentation. At the top, there is a tapering cross with a coped cover, supported by cusped arms below.
