Description

Nos. 8 to 12 Great Russell Street are five terraced houses that were originally part of a larger terrace with No. 5. They were built in 1764 for the Bedford Estate and were refronted around 1850. The houses are constructed of brick with a mid-19th century stucco front, featuring flat roofs and rendered brick stacks. They rise to four storeys and have a total of ten window openings. Most of the ground floor features 20th-century shop windows and doors, except for No. 9, which retains a 19th-century shopfront. The windows are primarily 4-pane sashes and 20th-century designs set within moulded architraves, with lugged architraves on the first and second floors, and cornices on the first floor. There are rusticated pilaster strips along the party walls, a continuous sill band at the third floor level, and a moulded cornice at the top. Inside, most of the houses preserve 18th-century moulded cornices, fireplace surrounds, and closed-string staircases.
