Description

This is a shop with offices above, built around 1893 to the designs of Wigg, Oliver and Hudson. The front is faced in red rubbed brick with red sandstone dressings, while the rear is in stock brick.

The building was constructed as a pair of ground floor shops, now combined into a single unit, with a separate entrance to the right. The original layout included two front rooms and a single room at the rear, plus a rear stair and a three-storey rear extension.

The exterior is in an eclectic Flemish Renaissance style, with four storeys and a gabled attic. The symmetrical facade is two bays wide. Windows on the first, second, and third floors are set within bold, round-headed arches with foliated capitals. The first and second floors feature recessed three-window canted bays with colonnettes at the angles, incorporating twisted colonnettes that run between floors. The windows have casement panes with three-light transoms. Recessed balconies on the third floor have wrought-iron balustrades, and behind them are tripartite stone-mullioned windows, topped by a segmental bracketed pediment over the taller central light. A heavy moulded cornice juts forward in the centre to support a bulbous corbel underneath an oriel within the gable. The elaborate shaped gable is terminated with scrolls and flanked by finials; a canted oriel with three round-headed windows is positioned between single windows, with fluted pilasters. A moulded cornice and parapet coping complete the structure. Instead of a traditional pediment, there's a cast-iron cupola with a brass dome.

The shop front has original corbels decorated with masks and foliage, but the rest of the front is modern and considered of limited interest. A decorative iron bracket for a hanging sign is located on the right-hand side.

The interior has been modernised and is of limited interest, although the original staircase with turned balusters has been preserved.

In the late 19th century, the corner of Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road included buildings like the Flying Horse pub, bisected by a narrow lane called Boziers Court. This area was redeveloped in 1892-3 in conjunction with the widening of Tottenham Court Road. No. 1 Tottenham Court Road was built around 1893. Originally, the ground floor was divided into two shops with bow windows; in 1904, the left-hand unit was Malzy's Fish Restaurant and the right-hand unit was Beedle and Co Tobacconists.

The building is designated for its special architectural interest as a striking example of late 19th-century commercial architecture, typical of the small-scale retail and office buildings found in London’s West End. It also contributes significantly to the townscape and integrates well with other listed buildings in the area.
