Description
The Dominion Theatre is a theatre built between 1928 and 1929, designed by W and TR Milburn. It features a steel-framed construction with a Portland stone facade. The exterior has a narrow facade divided into three main bays, with recessed entrance doors that span the full width. The wooden doors are glazed in panels and adorned with carved moulding, situated beneath a projecting canopy. The corners and the center of the facade feature pilaster strips, with sculptured plaques displaying masks at the bases. The facade is concave in shape, with three square-headed openings filled with decorative wrought-iron work, and a simple cornice band that is slightly raised in the center.
Inside, the theatre boasts a grand two-storey entrance foyer with staircases on either side leading to a central balcony. The foyer has stripped Classical detailing and original pendant lights. The circle lounge and lower circle lounge maintain similar detailing. The auditorium includes two galleries, one of which is disused, and features Roman Classical detailing on the walls and ceiling, with two tiers of galleries and round-cornered boxes on either side of the proscenium, although the upper pair of boxes was never intended for seating. The original light fittings remain in place.
Historically, the Dominion Theatre represents a significant phase in theatre design, blending the broad layout and decorative style typical of cinemas of that era while always being intended for theatrical performances.
