Description

Burton's Headquarters and Shop is a seven-storey building located on a corner site at New Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, constructed around 1929-30 by architect Harry Wilson for Montague Burton. The building features a stone-faced steel frame and has a main facade with seven bays, including recessed canted angles on either side. The left return to Tottenham Court Road has three bays, while the right return has two bays. The ground floor shop has been altered in the late 20th century.

The first floor features a mezzanine with margin glazed, tripartite metal framed windows set in plain rectangular recesses. The main facade is decorated with Greek detailing, including six Corinthian pilasters that rise from the first to the third floor, supporting an entablature with a projecting cornice topped with antefixae. Within this framework, there are metal framed tripartite windows with spandrel panels on the second and third floors. The outer bays have narrow, vertically set windows on the first, second, and third floors. The attic storey has short, horizontally set windows, above which is a stepped parapet featuring a shaped, architraved, horizontally set window topped with a winged cartouche. The Tottenham Court Road facade is similar, with recessed angles featuring distyle-in-antis fluted columns and stepped back parapets. The right-hand return has plain recessed openings across four floors, with a tripartite window in the left bay and paired windows in the recessed left bay.

This building served as the flagship store and offices for an organization founded in 1914 that grew to become the largest men's clothing organization in the world, known for providing quality clothing at the lowest prices. Burton was also recognized as a pioneer in industrial welfare within a challenging industry.
