Description

Numbers 23-27 are a group of five terraced houses built between 1800 and 1805, designed by James Burton. They are constructed from multi-coloured stock brick, with No. 23 featuring a rusticated stucco ground floor. The buildings rise four storeys and include basements, each with three windows, while No. 23 has a four-window return, mostly blind, facing Bedford Place. The round-headed entrances are set in recesses and have reeded pilaster jambs topped with cornice-heads, except for No. 23, which has a plain stuccoed archivolt and narrow sidelights. The entrances also feature fanlights, with No. 26 showcasing a radial fanlight, and panelled doors. The windows have gauged red brick flat arches, with recessed sash windows and a first-floor casement, some retaining original glazing bars. Nos. 25, 26, and 27 have patterned panes at the top of their casements. There are continuous cast-iron balconies at the first-floor level and a continuous sill band at the third floor, topped by a parapet. The interiors have not been inspected. The houses are complemented by attached cast-iron railings with urn finials, while No. 23 has more elaborate baluster finials. This terrace was built on the site of Bedford House, formerly known as Southampton House, which was demolished in 1799.
