Description

Numbers 74 to 77 are a terrace of four houses built around 1662 to 1664, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of stucco with a rusticated ground floor and rise four storeys with basements, each featuring three windows. Number 77 has a three-window return to Montague Street. The entrances are framed with architraved stucco surrounds, panelled reveals, consoles, and cornices, and include fanlights and panelled doors. Between the houses and at the corners, pilasters (rusticated on the first and second floors) support the main cornice, which is topped with a balustraded parapet. The first-floor windows are architraved four-pane sashes, with console-bracketed cornices above. A bracketed cornice is present at the third-floor level. The return of Number 77 features a cast-iron verandah, added in 1841, which has an elaborately ornamented cast-iron balustrade, including heads on roundels and foliage, along with posts supporting a tented canopy.

Inside, Number 75 has a panelled hall and rooms, with a staircase featuring barley sugar twist balusters and a wreathed handrail. Number 77 boasts a panelled hall with Corinthian fluted pilasters and a door with enriched mouldings, along with its original staircase. The terrace also includes attached 19th-century cast-iron railings to the areas. Notably, Number 77 was the home of architect Thomas Henry Wyatt, commemorated by a plaque from the Greater London Council.
