Description
The listing describes a pair of K6 telephone kiosks situated on the west side of Montague Street, in Bloomsbury. These kiosks flank the entrance piers and gates leading to the eastern facade of the British Museum. Constructed of cast iron and glass, they are painted red overall with long horizontal glazing in the door and sides, and feature applied crowns on the top panels. Rectangular white display signs, reading "TELEPHONE," are affixed beneath the shallow-curved roof. The kiosks contain modernised internal equipment.
The K6 telephone kiosk, designed in 1935 by Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate King George V’s Silver Jubilee, represents a significant milestone in 20th-century industrial design. It evolved from Scott’s earlier K2 design, offering a more streamlined, compact, and cost-effective solution. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, and while many have been replaced, they remain an iconic feature of the British landscape.
The kiosks are designated at Grade II for their special design interest, as a landmark industrial design by Giles Gilbert Scott, and for their group value, contributing to the visual relationship with the Grade I listed British Museum and three further listed buildings on Montague Street.
