Description
Nos. 1-8, Worcester Terrace are a group of eight terrace houses built around 1815 in the early 19th century, and confirmed as existing by 1819. They are constructed of limestone ashlar with slate and concrete tile roofs, featuring moulded stacks to the party walls. The houses are double-depth, and stepped up in pairs from the west.
Architecturally, they are three storeys high with basements, and each has a two-window front range. They have a low, coped parapet, a coved cornice and a ground-floor platband. The second floors have six-over-six pane sash windows, some with chamfered arrises, while the ground floor windows are eight-over-eight pane sashes, some of which have been altered. Balconettes are present to the first-floor windows with the exception of No. 8 on the right, which features a doorway in its return. The houses have semicircular arches above six-panel doors, each with a raised upper panel and a fanlight with radial glazing bars.
Nos. 1 and 2 on the left are a lower, painted, one-window range, with a blind window to the party wall and various balconettes to the upper floors. The doorways have flat arches and overlights – the one at No. 1 is similar to the rest of the terrace, while No. 2 has four panels to its door. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. No. 1 was altered in 1983, and the rear of No. 5 was extended in 1985.
These houses form part of a late Georgian development along London Road, demonstrating crisp and well-executed detailing. Leases are dated 1816 for No. 6 and March 1813 for No. 7.
