Description

This listing describes a group of six monuments located in the Great Churchyard of Bury St Edmunds.

Monument 29 is a flat coffin with a head and foot, made of Ketton stone, dating from 1809. It commemorates John Bull and his wife Ann, who died in 1831, and features good lettering. Monument 43A is a headstone from 1707, also made of Ketton stone, with a narrow top adorned with two tulips and inscribed with the name Richard, who died on February 7, 1707, at the age of 55 years. Monument 44 is an 18th-century headstone, again in Ketton stone, inscribed in memory of Frances Daniel.

Monument 49 consists of a head and footstone with a coffin-shaped ledger, dating from 1786, dedicated to Thomas and his wife, who died in 1812. Monument 50 is a headstone from 1807 for George Griggs, featuring an open book in a tondo before his name. Lastly, Monument 51 is a headstone from 1818 for Elizabeth Griggs, which has an old-style plumb line carved on the south side, possibly indicating a trade or freemason connection.
