Description

This listing describes a group of eight churchyard monuments located in Bury St Edmunds.

MON 159 is a headstone made of Ketton stone, dating from 1844, commemorating Robert, the son of James and Mary Ann Ely. It is a palimpsest, mostly buried and reused in 1844. The original design is now upside down, as the mason reversed it and reshaped the bottom edge to create a new top. The original inscription in a cartouche reads: "...Christopher (?) son of WILLIAM SMITH who departed this life ...of Feb. 1709 Aged.... Also four of their children."

MON 159a is a memorial to Thomas Jacob, but it is not included in the schedule.

MON 161 is a coffin stone made of Portland stone, dating from 1831, dedicated to Marianne, daughter of Thomas and Ann Young, and Henry Shadow Young, who died in 1846.

MON 292 is a coffin stone with rounded ends from 1847, commemorating Amelia, the wife of Henry Lockwood.

MON 294 is a headstone from the 18th century, made of Ketton stone, featuring a bold relief design with a bellied cartouche, skull, flowers, and leaves.

MON 295 is another coffin stone with rounded ends from 1824, also made of Ketton stone, honoring Mary Ann, the wife of John Cambridge, who died in 1824, and John Cambridge, who died in 1857.

MON 319 consists of a coffin stone with two inscribed footstones from 1821, dedicated to Thomas Young, who died in 1821, and Ann Young, who died in 1826.

MON 320 is a coffin stone made of Portland stone from 1818, commemorating Ann, the wife of John Clemence, who died in 1818, and John Clemence, who died in 1850.
