Description
A group of three churchyard monuments located in the Great Churchyard of Bury St Edmunds.
MON 14 is a tombstone from 1774 made of Ketton stone, dedicated to Prudence, the wife of Stephen Hailstone, who died in 1806, along with their two sons, Thomas, who died in infancy, and James, who died in 1807. It features a narrow oval box-tomb on a plinth that once had railings.
MON 15 consists of a headstone and footstone with a heavy ledger, dating from 1660, also made of Ketton stone. It commemorates a man who died in 1660 and his wife who died in 1661. The footstone bears the inscription "Here lyes John, Henry, ..., ..., Sons of Philip & Dorothy Mils," listing several sons who died in infancy, including John in 1689, Henry in 1695, and Thomas in 1696.
MON 30 is a headstone from 1752, also made of Ketton stone, dedicated to George Candler and his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1727. This monument features a very elaborate deeply-carved design that includes angel heads, skulls, drapes, urns, and pilasters, along with a bellied cartouche.
