Description

This listing describes a group of eight monuments located in the Great Churchyard of Bury St Edmunds.

MONUMENT 48 is a headstone from 1699 made of Ketton stone, featuring a winged angel head flanked by draped skulls and a shield cartouche. It is inscribed with "here lyeth ye body of SUSAN ye daughter of JOHN CRASKE. She died ye 1 November 1699."

MONUMENT 54 is a coffin-shaped ledger from 1715, also made of Ketton stone. It has head and footstones that are identically carved with a winged angel head and drapes, inscribed with "...CRASKE...Alderman of this Borough who dyed ye 26 of June Anno Dom 1715 aged 75 yrs."

MONUMENT 60 is a flat coffin-shaped ledger slab with head and footstones from the 18th century, made of Ketton stone. The broken headstone features two fine winged angel heads.

MONUMENT 67 is another flat coffin-shaped ledger with head and footstone, dating to around 1715.

MONUMENT 73 is a box tomb with a table top, possibly from 1711, made of Ketton stone. It has a very worn inscription on top and a fine Rococo panel at the east end in high relief depicting two winged angel heads, drapes, and flowers.

MONUMENT 74 is a flat ledger slab with head and footstones from 1789, made of Ketton and York stone. The headstone features a delicate winged angel head and is inscribed with SARAH 1789 and THOMAS WILSON aged 73, 2.3.1809.

MONUMENT 80 is a headstone from 1752 made of Ketton stone, dedicated to ROBERT BEEPS, 1752, and ANN, his wife, 1748. It has a double inscription panel with winged angel heads.

MONUMENT 86 is a headstone from the 18th century made of Ketton stone, which has no inscription but is decorated with a bold skull.
