Description
This pair of gate piers and gates, built around 1867 for Lankester Webb, is located on the south side of Combs Park Road, 50 meters south of Model Farm. They once provided access to a roadway leading to the Tannery. The gate piers stand approximately 2.3 meters high and are 0.5 meters square, featuring a slight chamfer and resting on a splayed plinth made of gault brick. Each pier is topped with a heavy weathered capping of reconstituted stone, which is complemented by a simple moulded brick cornice below. The gates themselves are made of painted timber, framed in oblong panels, each with a stop chamfer on the edges. The outer stile of each gate extends upward in a swan-neck shape, supporting the top rail with a diagonal iron bar. The lower row of panels is boarded, while the upper row is saltire-braced. These gates and piers are included for their group value.
