Description
Old Farm House is a farmhouse dating from around 1550 to 1570, with various additions from the 17th and 19th centuries. The building has two storeys and attics, originally designed with a three-cell plan and a cross-passage entrance. It features a timber-framed structure with roughcast exterior and a plaintiled roof, which has an axial chimney that was rebuilt in red brick in the mid-20th century. Most of the windows are 20th-century casements, and there is a glazed 20th-century entrance door in a lean-to conservatory.
Inside, the hall showcases typical late 16th-century framing, including a roll-moulded bridging beam with leaf-stops, with the joists also said to be similarly moulded. There are twin service room doorways with rudimentary ogee heads and an original diamond-mullioned window in one of the service rooms. The hall features a wide open fireplace with a cambered lintel and arch-windbraced close studding.
Alterations from the early 17th century include several blocked ovolo-mullioned windows and a newel staircase with an associated cupboard that has turned balusters in the ventilation panel. The roof has butt-purlins dating from the 17th century. A wing attached to the original parlour was added in the 16th or 17th century and originally had one and a half storeys. Further additions were made in late 19th-century red brick.
